Helping Out Down By The Lake
I went down to the Grand Lake Theatre by my house to donate some clothes and about 100 new t-shirts from work i found in storage room. I go down there and see containers for trucks from the AFL CIO being loaded by basically the people of Oakland. I saw so many people that I'd seen around town. At bus stops at Lukas at the Safeway. I bagged up my stuff in a bag as asked and then I handed it to someone. Then I helped someone carry a box. Then I grabbed some tape and started to tape boxes of food and toys shut. Then marking them.
Before I know it I'm collecting new donations and putting food and toiletries in boxes and I wish I had a tape gun. I know how to tape boxes shut. When I first moved to SF I ran a movie warehouse and shipped boxes all over the world. I can tape boxes shut and its the first time I used my teeth to get them shut faster. There where a few hundred people in front of the Grand Lake helping to quickly box stuff up and get it in a container. I was there when the first truck got filled and everyone cheered.
I'm sure many felt like they did something. They did'nt feel helpless. For the first time in a week I did not feel powerless to help. The cut off time was 8pm and people were still coming and giving what ever they could. I saw a little girl donate her old pooh bear. I took apart a baby stroller and I packed tampons and toothbrushes and pain killers. After being there for a few hours and after the last container was filled I looked around and felt so relieved. I knew these things were going to help my fellow Americans who need every ones help. I would want the help. Imagine if it was us.
I handed my pen and tape to someone and walked up the street and back to the car and I said goodbye to no one because then I would have gotten in the way of people filling up more boxes being filled taped and stacked for tomorrows next container.
They still need people at 8am tomorrow to help pack up and fill more containers. If you've got the time and are in Oakland and can help you will be doing something.

Nice work, good to hear that packing aid did not involve box cutters. I am shocked and dismayed at current events these days. I feel like shit is bizarro, like the head of FEMA is gonna get an award soon from the president for "serving the people".
